What is a Clutch?
A clutch is a mechanical device that regulates the transfer of rotational power from the engine to the transmission and wheels. When the clutches are engaged, the flow of engine power to the transmission is disrupted, which stops wheels from spinning while keeping the car's engine running. It ensures that the gear shift is smooth and avoids any grinding.
Clutches are found in both manual and automatic transmission vehicles. They function on the principle of friction, which is produced between two main parts, flywheel-connected to the engine, and clutch plate-links with the transmission. Both of these parts are coated with a friction producing material. Other parts in the assembly include a pressure plate and a set of springs.
Clutch in Manual Transmission Vehicles
In a manual clutch assembly, the flywheel is always spinning with the engine. When the clutch is not engaged, the clutch plate is pushed up against the flywheel by the pressure exerted from the pressure plate. As a result, the clutch plate synchronizes with the spinning flywheel transferring the power from the engine to the transmission, moving the wheels. As the clutch pedal is activated, springs move the pressure plate away from the clutch plate, which breaks the power transmission between the engine and the spinning driveshaft. This results in a reduction of speed and, finally, the movement of the wheels.
Clutch in Automatic Transmission Vehicles
While manual transmission works by stepping on a clutch pedal, automatic transmissions use a torque converter. The torque converter is an assembly of the impeller, turbine, stator, and a lock-up clutch, and it is connected to the flywheel, which then links to the engine. These components drive the movement of fluid in the torque converter controlling the transfer of power from the engine to the transmission driveshaft. The lock-up clutch is engaged at high speed to prevent the engine from stalling and improving fuel economy.

- hard to engage clutch pedal
- shifting gears produce a grinding noise
- clutch pedal gets stuck
